The August Book: The Westing Game

Due to delay in access to Greg's book choice, Ilene and Greg have traded months.  This month's book, then, chosen by Ilene, is The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin.  It's a mystery and there's something about the reading of a Will.  Sounds intriguing!  And, it's a Newbery Award Winner!

  3. The reason I picked this book is because it was the most enjoyable book I had to read in school. I even read everything I could find from the author, I really like her style of writing.

  4. This was so much fun! I loved the half-buried punchlines and the half-buried clues, and the fact that I never could figure out what in the world was going on. Although -SPOILER- I totally figured out that Sam Westing wasn't dead. And that Sydelle was the mistake, although I thought the mistake might also be the new Mrs. Hoo.

I really enjoyed it! What a great pick, Ilene!

  5. I thought this was an odd little book. I didn't really see the end coming, though in my defense I wasn't trying. I decided to just go along for the ride on this one since it was JF. It was really hard to not put the clues from each partnership together into the lyrics for America, the Beautiful, though.

    It was fun.

  6. I was caught off-guard by the writing style on the first page. Fun, fun, fun. I thought it got a little slow at the end, but the writing kept you guessing, and it was fun to see everyone's perspective practically at the same time. I just read this one casually and let the surprises come. Great, fun read.

  7. Now that I've read it again as an adult, it's a totally different experience. Maybe because I knew what would happen, I felt like it dragged in some places. But I still enjoyed it. I especially like reading about people who get a large sum of money; it doesn't happen very often in real life unfortunately!

  8. Huh? That's how I felt most of the way through this book. Huh? I had a hard time keeping the characters straight. I really had a hard time wanting to read it. It was actually kind of frustrating to me, and even though some of the answers came at the end of the book, I'm still having a hard time figuring out exactly what happened. Why the words to America, the Beautiful? (which was pretty obvious early on--how many times to you hear the word fruited?) Maybe I need to read it again. I did feel better about the book at the end, but I didn't enjoy the style of writing. I'm starting to think that the kind of books I enjoy reading are very limited! This is a great chance to expand my horizons! I'm kind of dreading reading September's book because it just doesn't look like the kind of book I will enjoy, but again...this is exposing me to many new types of reading! I'm loving that part of it! Happy reading everyone!
