The book is:
Off to Be the Wizard by Scott Meyer.
Yes, it's the Scott Meyer from Sunnyside, Washington; the Scott Meyer who writes the online cartoon known as Basic Instructions.
I've read this book, and yes, it's quite nerdy. It's also a lot of fun, completely clean (he doesn't even swear), and bizarrely unexpected. Don't read it too quickly, there's a lot of subtle humor that you don't want to miss. I'll admit, some of the humor went over my head. That's okay, even if you don't catch every joke, it's still a fun story.
It's in the Dropbox now in epub and mobi formats (remember, mobi is for kindles, epub should work for basically everything else). Unfortunately, there is no audio edition, so no listening this time around. However, it's not all that long, so it shouldn't cause too much grief.
Trying something new this time around, you can download the epub here <----click right there or the mobi file here <----click right there.
Good luck and happy reading!
Uh-oh. Although I find Basic Instructions amusing, I don't usually find them all that funny. Hope this book doesn't go completely over my head. Subtle humor is only good if you get the joke...:)
ReplyDeleteWhen I started to read this I expected to find it slightly amusing and a little boring. That's not what happened. I really enjoyed it and found it pretty funny. I even laughed out loud in several places! It was fun to read.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so spoilers and all.
ReplyDeleteI LOVED this book! It was definitely nerdy, yes, and obviously something Scott Meyer spent a lot of time fantasizing about while writing code, but I think it's a fairly accurate answer to that age-old question, "What would happen if you gave a bunch of nerds magic powers?"
Because you KNOW that somebody's going to try to recreate Middle Earth.
An absolute riot. I loved it. Thanks for the read!
