Sarah's choice for the month of March is The Giver by Lois Lowry.
The epub is now in the dropbox. The rest of the series, consisting of The Messenger, Gathering Blue, and Son are also in the dropbox, should you desire to read the entire series.
Okay, I read The Giver and I really quite liked it. What a facinating premise! I was kind of intrigued by the whole idea of that kind of society. Bev said that my mom hated that book! Of course we can all see why such a place and lifestyle would not be desirable, but it was very interesting. I went on to read Gathering Blue, and then I read Son. I enjoyed them all, however not as much as I enjoyed The Giver. I didn't see what Gathering Blue had to do with The Giver, until I read The Son, and then it kind of tied it all together. Then I discovered that I was supposed to have read The Messenger before I read The Son, so I'm reading it now. I find them all worth reading. Guess I'm not like my mom. (which is not necessarily a good thing--I wish I were more like her in some ways) But now I'm reading My Name is Asher Lev, and at first I was kind of frustrated because I don't understand the Jewish traditions and some of the words are unfamiliar, but I find I'm starting to really enjoy it even though it's a bit weird!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a particularly well-done novel. To what extent do we need to go to eliminate differences in order to maintain peace? Do we need to lose the ability to see colors? To hear music? To taste food? Are humans really incapable of controlling themselves? Do we need to eliminate any temptations, or can we learn to master our passions? I was really intrigued.
ReplyDeleteI will try to get to the rest of this series soon. (But, like Tanya, my reading list seems to have taken on a life of it's own, and seems intent on world domination, judging by its exponential growth, of late).
